Perkins&Will Los Angeles

Perkins&Will are the designers of the subsidized housing at 14545 Lanark Street in Panorama City, CA, and it is blatantly clear that they are out of their depth when it comes to designing residential buildings. They are accustomed to creating office spaces, and it shows in the complete lack of functionality in these units. There are only two counters, with one counter occupied by a microwave, leaving virtually no space for storage. Each room has bizarre angles that make it impossible to arrange furniture properly. There isn't even enough space for a kitchen table. The kitchen itself is nothing more than a narrow hallway with appliances crammed on one side, leading into a tiny dining/living room that can’t even accommodate a couch. The single bathroom lacks a bathtub and has a shower with no water leak protection whatsoever. The design is absolutely atrocious, and it's clear that they should have declined this project due to their lack of expertise in residential architecture. They should stick to what they know best—office buildings. I hate, hate, hate these units; they are completely unfit for living. It's disgraceful how they treat people who are just trying to get by. Just because we don’t have a lot of money doesn’t mean we deserve to live in such substandard conditions. The building may look beautiful from the outside, but it is a nightmare on the inside. Shame on Perkins&Will for this atrocious design.
